Is it time to upgrade your consumer unit?
The consumer unit is at the heart of an electrical installation. An older fuse box is not automatically unsafe simply because of its age, but older equipment may not provide the level of additional protection and functionality available from a well-designed modern consumer unit.
I'm Lee Ward, an independent electrician with more than 30 years' electrical industry experience. I can assess the existing installation, explain whether an upgrade is appropriate and, where required, install a modern consumer unit suited to the property and the circuits it supplies.
What a modern consumer unit can provide
Individual RCBO protection
Modern RCBO arrangements can provide individual overcurrent and residual-current protection to each circuit, helping to reduce the disruption caused when a fault occurs.
RCD protection
Appropriate residual-current protection can provide important additional protection against electric shock and certain electrical faults.
Surge protection
Where required or appropriate, surge protective devices (SPDs) can help protect electrical and electronic equipment from transient overvoltages.
Clear circuit identification
A professionally finished consumer unit should be clearly labelled so circuits and protective devices can be readily identified.
Testing before completion
The installation is inspected and electrically tested as part of the work, rather than treating the consumer unit as a simple box swap.
Certification
Applicable electrical certification and documentation are provided for the completed work.
More than simply replacing the fuse box
A consumer unit replacement should not be approached as a cosmetic change. Before and during the work, the condition of the existing installation needs to be considered and appropriate electrical tests carried out. This can identify defects or existing issues that may need attention before the new protective devices can operate as intended.

Do I definitely need a new consumer unit?
Not necessarily. The age or appearance of a fuse box alone does not determine whether replacement is required. The type and condition of the equipment, the protection provided, the condition of the installation and the reason for considering an upgrade all matter.
If you're unsure, I can assess the existing arrangement and give you a straightforward explanation of the options. For a wider assessment of the electrical installation, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) may be appropriate.
