When an electrical problem cannot wait
If you suddenly lose power, a protective device keeps tripping, you notice a burning smell or an electrical accessory is hot, sparking or damaged, it is sensible to have the problem assessed promptly.
I'm Lee Ward, an independent electrician with more than 30 years' electrical industry experience. For emergency electrical work you deal directly with me — from the first call through to diagnosis, making the installation safe and carrying out the appropriate repair where possible.

Emergency electrical problems I can help with
Loss of power
Unexpected loss of supply to part or all of a property, including individual circuits, sockets, lighting or distribution equipment.
RCD / RCBO tripping
Repeated or unexplained tripping that will not reset, or circuits that trip again as soon as they are energised.
Burning smells & overheating
Hot sockets, switches or electrical equipment, signs of scorching, unusual smells or suspected overheating that needs urgent assessment.
Sparking or arcing
Visible sparking, crackling or arcing from accessories, wiring, connections or electrical equipment.
Damaged or exposed wiring
Accidentally damaged cables, broken accessories, exposed conductors or other defects that may present an immediate electrical risk.

Intermittent faults, unusual noises, partial power loss and other electrical problems that cannot reasonably be left until a routine appointment.
Diagnose the fault — don't just keep resetting it
A breaker or RCD that trips repeatedly is doing so for a reason. Continually resetting it without finding the cause can mask an underlying fault and may make diagnosis more difficult.

What happens when you call
I'll ask a few straightforward questions about what has happened, what is currently working and whether there are any signs of heat, burning, sparking, smoke or physical damage. This helps me understand the urgency and, where appropriate, give simple safety advice before attendance.
If it is safe to do so, a photograph of the consumer unit, damaged accessory or affected area sent by WhatsApp can also be useful. Do not remove covers or touch exposed electrical parts simply to take a photo.
Making the installation safe
Some emergency visits result in a permanent repair there and then. In other cases, the safest first step may be to isolate a faulty circuit or item, make the installation safe and then arrange the parts or further work needed for a permanent repair.
I will explain what I have found, what has been made safe and what further work — if any — is recommended.
